Book Review: Learning and Leading in Ministry by J.Mark Jordan

The second in a two volume set.  As my previous blog reviewed volume 1 "Living and Leading in Ministry", I would like to attempt to review the second book in this series.  Before beginning with my words, I'd like to borrow the words of a couple great men of God who gives their responses to the book for the back cover.

Everything rises and falls with leadership.  Learning and Leading in Ministry is both timely and timeless.  The author has thoughtfully and succinctly addressed more than 30 leadership principles and encapsulated their essence in short but very well done chapters.  You will enjoy reading a number of his personal experiences, a collection of quotes from famous authors and leaders, and fascinating historic moments that illustrate the lesson to be learned.  This is a valuable, easy-to-use resource for any leader who is serious about equipping and empowering the next generation.     - Stan Gleason ~ Pastor of The Life Church in Kansas City, Missouri & Assistant General Superintendent of the United Pentecostal Church, International headquarters in Hazelwood, Missouri.

Learning and Leading in Ministry is a tremendous leadership resource for those endeavoring to lead the twenty-first century, end time church. The thirty-one lessons are both insightful and easy to read.  I could not put it down.  It will bless you whether you read it through or pick it up and read a chapter a day.  I have a practice of keeping special sayings nearby to intermittently examine.  Learning and Leading in Ministry contains many gems I will keep handy to jog my memory to the need for continuous learning.  True leaders are always willing to learn! Enjoy learning from this timely volume by Mark Jordan.  - Bruce Howell ~ General Director of Foreign Missions, United Pentecostal Church, International headquarters in Hazelwood, Missouri.

As I review this book, I'd like to thank Mark Jordan for this willingness to express himself so transparently to his readers.  It is refreshing to see a leaders not only tell about all the great things that they have accomplished.  He shares experiences on both sides to give you an insight into the life of one of the United Pentecostal Churches most balanced leaders.

For that leader who is honest about examining himself and learning at the feet of other leaders this book is for them.  He deals with issues such as the man who has all charisma and no really substance.  He also nails that one who isn't pouring the energy into his ministries like he should.  He swings to hit that leader that thinks he is superman and tried to do everything himself.  He shows the importance of dividing and multiplying your efforts through the example of Jesus 2 hand compared to the disciples 24 hands.  He talks about control in the ministry as well as arrogance.  Many other topic to include, but not limited to; assuming nothing, being careful to enjoy your accomplishment too soon, passing the baton of leadership, modeling moral leadership, and thinking things through.

As his previous book; Living and Leading in Ministry, it is a great short ready it is probably a little longer read than the first book, but still can be read in a few hours.  I began the book this morning and a couple small sessions of reading today and then a couple hours tonight, I was able to complete the book in one day.  I will leave you with two things.  First, this book is a must read and should be read again and again.  Second, a quote from the book that really got me ~ "If you, as a leader, expect people to give you back exactly what you give to them - and for the same reasons - you will live in a state of constant irritation and disappointment."

Humbly Submitted,
Pastor Troy G. Reynolds
